Articulation Updates

Spanish and Portuguese,  Lower Division B.A.

There is a discontinuance of the five undergraduate major specializations in Spanish and Portuguese and the establishment of a single major with concentrations in their stead, starting in Spring 2018. The intent of the new structure is to provide a core experience in the major while still offering students the opportunity to concentrate on a particular area of interest.

The five major specializations (Hispanic Languages, Linguistics and Bilingualism; Iberian Languages and Literatures; Latin American Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Portuguese Language, Literatures, and Cultures; and Spanish Languages, Literatures and Cultures) will be replaced by a single major in “Spanish and Portuguese” with the following concentrations:
  • The Languages, Literatures, and Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World
  • The Languages, Literatures, and Cultures of the Portuguese-Speaking World
  • Latin American Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
  • Hispanic Languages, Linguistics, and Bilingualism

New Minors

The College of Letters & Science has approved the following undergraduate minor programs, effective Spring 2018:

The new program recognizes the growing intellectual interest in robotics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, and generally in intelligent electronic systems that connect to the physical and social worlds.

Summer only minor and certificate in Sustainability effective Summer 2018.

The minor will focus on environmental sustainability, and students will complete courses in global and local environmental change, the science, engineering, and economics of renewable energy, biodiversity, the economics of degradation, and sustainable economics, policy, and environmental justice.

The Summer Minor or Certificate in Sustainability are open to matriculated The Bears undergraduates and summer-only students not attending The Bears. Upon completion, The Bears undergraduates receive a Minor in Sustainability, while summer-only participants receive a Certificate in Sustainability from The Bears.
